RCA EPs - 1963-1967

In the 1960s extended-plays or compactos-duplos as they were commonly known, were somewhat popular in Brazil for those who didn't have enough money to buy albums - also called 'long-plays' - but had a few spare cruzeiros (the Brazilian currency) to splurge on something that lasted longer than just a single.

Some record companies, like CBS (Columbia Records) released albums (12 tracks) and then proceeded to release 3 extended-plays out of those LPs having 4 tracks each. That worked only for very popular acts like Roberto Carlos who kept on selling compactos-duplos all through the year.

RCA Victor usually released extended-play combining tracks from different albums of the same artist. Extended-plays were really interesting in their combination of songs. Their sleeves could be real works of art made out of thicker card-board paper than the singles (compactos-simples).

Here is a partial list of extended-plays - a.k.a. compactos-duplos - released by RCA Victor between 1962 and 1970.

What one realizes looking at this partial list of foreign compactos-duplos released by Brazilian RCA Victor is that the Italian 'invasion' actually expelled the Spanish out of the Brazilian market. Chilean, Mexican and Argentine acts were sent into 'exile' when the Italian came in.

Miguel Aceves Mejia - LCD-3011 - Mexico's Troubador was famous in all of Latin America, including Brazil whose native tongue is Portuguese but is able to understand Spanish fairly well. The EP back-cover carried his biography and curiosities about his career.

Breaking up is hard to do - Neil Sedaka - LCD-3031
Terig Tucci, Argentine band-leader plays 'España cañi' - LCD-3033; España cañil's back-cover
Rancheiras - LCD-3036 - Miguel Aceves Mejia
Rancheiras - LCD-3037 - Miguel Aceves Mejia
Joselito - El caballito blanco - LCD-3054
'Phaedra' a Jules Dassin's production - Henry Mancini - LCD-3055
Sacha Bossa Nova - LCD-3056 - chansonier Sacha Distel make inroads in the Bossa Nova trend, singing 'Desafinado'
Paul Anka's 'Eso beso' - LCD-3058
Antonio Prieto - LCD-3043 - Chilean Antonio Prieto sings 'Aria di neve' in Italian, a gloomy song written by Sergio Endrigo. Antonio's brother, Joaquin Pietro worked as an arranger at RCA Italiana in Rome. Note 'Cara de payaso' is Brazilian famous samba 'Palhaçada' made famous by Miltinho.
Rita Pavone - LCD-3064 - This EP was Rita Pavone's first recording released in Brazil. It contained 'La partita di pallone', her 1st hit in Italy; 'Come te non c'è nessuno' her 1st # 1 in Italy; 'Alla mia età', her 3rd single and 'Clementine Chérie', a B-side. Actually it is the very 1st Italian compacto-duplo starting a trend towards Italian releases instead of Spanish-speaking discs. All of sudden, Brazilians realized there was a language such as Italian... and their music was very interesting. Pavone's first ever release in Brazil had liner notes written by Teddy Reno, her manager.
Nico Fidenco LCD-3067  (1963)
Donatella - Fino alla fine - LCD-3070; Donatella Moretti's original Italian sleeve.
Mr. Lucky - Henry Mancini - LCD-3072
Annamaria - Sergio Endrigo - LCD-3074
Adorabile Rita Pavone - LCD-3076 - This was the best selling EP of 1964. It contains 'Datemi un martello', Pavone's greatest hit in Latin America; 'Cuore', probably Pavone's best ever song; 'Quando sogno' an American ever-green (On the sunny side of the street) transformed into a hully-gully and 'Pel di carota', a tongue-in-cheek dittie taken from her 1st Italian album but that had not been released in Brazil up to that moment.
O mio Signore - Edoardo Vianello - LCD-3077
Sensazionale Rita Pavone - LCD-3078 - This EP is an example how hybrid they could be. 'Scrivi' was Pavone's latest recording she had recorded in the US in May 1964; 'Sul cucuzzolo' was from her 1st album; 'Si fossi un uomo' was a German song she'd recorded for the German market in late 1963 and then sang it in Italian for her 2nd album; 'Non è facile avere 18 anni' was the main track in her 2nd album.
Miguel Aceves Mejia - LCD-3079
Prieto - Antonio Prieto - LCD-3079
Meglio stasera - Henry Mancini - LCD-3081 - 'The Pink Panther' turned out to be a gold mine for Henry Mancini whose sound-track was hailed as one of the best thing coming out of Hollywood to date. 'Meglio stasera' with lyrics by Migliacci was released as a single and EP.
Ma vie - Alain Barrière - LCD-3082 - This was the best selling EP of 1965. It contains simply the best from Barriére's album.
Kissin' time - Rita Pavone - LCD-3083 - This is a rarity as Rita Pavone in English was not as popular as she had been in her native tongue. Pavone's American album was released in November 1964 but this EP was released in early 1965. It contains 'Kissin' time' that Brazilian RCA thought would become a hit (it was not); 'Just once more' which was translated into Spanish as 'Pido paz' and went to #1 in Argentina; 'Lipstick on your collar' an old Connie Francis tune from 1959 and Bobby Darin's 'Splish splash' from 1958. The A-side were songs from Pavone's 1st US album and the B-side were songs from 'Small Wonder', her 2nd album for the American market.
Era d'estate - Sergio Endrigo - LCD-3084

Con te sulla spiaggia - Nico Fidenco - LCD-3085
In ginocchio da te - Gianni Morandi - LCD-3086
Henry Mancini's Pink Panther - LCD-3089 -
Al Hirt - LCD-3087
Joselito LCD-3090 still sold records in 1965. He had been huge in 1958 and 1959 appearing in very popular films like 1956's 'El pequeño ruiseñor', 1957's 'Saeta del ruiseñor' and 1958's 'Escucha mi canción'.
Miguel Aceves Mejia - LCD-3091 - From among the many Spanish-speaking acts we had before the Italians invaded Brazil, Miguel Aceves Mejia was probably the only one who survived the onslaught of the Italians.
Tremarella - Edoardo Vianello - LCD-3094
Sabor a mi - Perez Prado e sua Orquestra - LCD-3095
Incredibile Rita Pavone - LCD-3097 - By mid 1965, Rita Pavone had already been to Brazil twice. Her first tour in June 1964 was sensational; her 2nd visit in April 1965 wasn't that great even though she was faultless. The problem with Pavone's 1965 tour was her repertoire. Her manager thought Brazilians would be enchanted with 'Viva la pappa col pomodoro' a tarantella that had been the opening theme of a TV mini-series shown in Italy earlier that year. Brazilians thought it a big yawn but Rita & her manager were slow to understand it. Rita Pavone squandered a good-will capital trying to foster a song that nobody cared about. 'La forza di lasciarti' is a superb song... if only it had been included in her live performances... 'San Francesco' had been a single in Brazil, but let's be honest, what teen-ager wants to hear a song about a saint who lived in the 11th Century? 'Lui' is a fantastic tune... but maybe it was a case of too little too late?
Star Dust - Al Hirt - LCD-3101
L'uomo che non sapeva amare - Nico Fidenco - LCD-3107 - plus 'La donna che non sapeva amare' (Jean Harlow)... it seemed like no men or women knew how to love!
Il mondo - Jimmy Fontana - LCD-3112
Solo tu - Rita Pavone - LCD-3113 - After more than a year with no new material, RCA finally releases this EP in mid-1966. 'Supercalifragilistic-espiralidoso' is hideous. Young people fled from Rita Pavone like fleeing from crazed African bees... 'Il plip' is another anomaly, an irritable song with very discordant sounds. Then they get two beautiful songs like 'Solo tu' and 'Stasera con te' and squander them in the same disc. And worse of all... Brazilian RCA didn't pay any attention at all to those releases. They simply put out the records and did nothing about them. They bombed! They didn't get air play and they died before they could  reach the beach. That was the end of Rita Pavone in Brazil as we know.
LCD-3114 - Alain Barrière who started himself a mini-French invasion with 'Ma vie', turns coat and joins the Italians, recording his originals in the Dante's tongue.
Si Fa Sera - Gianni Morandi - LCD-3115
The Rokes (3116) with 'C'è una strana espressione nei tuoi occhi' / 'Walking the dog' / 'Grazie a te' / 'Hi-heel sneaker'.
'Cammina, cammina' (3124) Jimmy Fontana's 2nd EP.
The Rokes' second & last EP (LCD-3125)
Gianni Morandi's 3rd EP (3126)
'Ciao amore ciao' (Goodbye love, goodbye) was a hit as a single and as an EP (compacto-duplo). Luigi Tenco started recording for Joke, switched over to Ricordi and finally landed at RCA Italiana where he recorded for less than 2 years before he shot himself in the head at San Remo on 27 January 1967.
The liner notes written in the EP's back cover by Waldyr Santos tries and gives an idea of how intricate and downright depressive Luigi Tenco's songs had been. Tenco was an angry young man who wrote songs about how love could be a one-way street... one gives all of oneself and gets nothing in return. In 'Tu non hai capito niente' (You haven't understood a thing) he is angry with his lover because she could not understand what he meant. Luigi Tenco had a bit of the nihilist in him too; 'Un giorno dopo l'altro' (One day after the other) shows a young man bored with the world and himself. 'Ciao amore ciao' nevertheless is his darkest song. He short of confess that living is meaningless and nothing makes sense.
Carmelo Pagano - LCD-3140 - Carmelo was one of the last new Italian acts to be released in Brazil in 1967, before the Italian wave subsided. By 1968 less and less Italians were heard on the radio due to the rapid Americanization of Brazilian culture and air-waves.
Henry Mancini - LCD-3135 - Mancini plays Nino Rota's theme from 'Romeo and Juliet' and went to #1 at the Billboard charts; back-cover of many compactos-duplos (EP)
Vedrai, vedrai (LCD-3135) tried to cash in Luigi Tenco's death furor 1 year after his suicide. There was not new material to release so they re-hashed what was possible.
Tenerezza - Gianni Morandi - LCD-3136  (1968)
Festival de San Remo '68 - various - LCD-3137
Scende la pioggia - Gianni Morandi - LCD-3141
Nilsson - Everybody's talking - LCD-3154 - Nilsson's recording was part of 'Midnight Cowboy's sound-track and it was a huge hit in the US and world-wide.
Henry Mancini - Midnight Cowboy - LCD-3155 - Mancini only plays the tunes from 1969's hit 'Midnight Cowboy'.
